What is Spatial Computing actually?
Tuesday, March 15, 2022
Spatial Computing refers to a set of technologies that enable humans to interact with computers in three-dimensional spaces.
Technologies under this umbrella include Augmented Reality(AR) and Virtual Reality(VR).
Coined by Simon Greenwold in 2003, the term ‘Spatial Computing’ has become a popular descriptor for AR/VR technologies. With the launch of Vision Pro, Apple has adopted 'Spatial Computing' as the preferred term for their Mixed Reality headset.
The naming of immersive technologies
With the introduction of Vision Pro, Apple has embraced the term Spatial Computing to encompass AR and VR. Known for setting industry standards and coining influential terminology, Apple has a long-standing history of shaping tech vocabulary. Similar to how they made 'App' a household term instead of 'software application,' Apple's significant role in consumer technology positions it to solidify Spatial Computing as the definitive industry label for AR/VR technologies.
